Italy, Venice. Pietro Lando, Doge. 1539-1545. Medal (Bronze, 39mm, 31.70 g 6), a struck example by Andrea Spinelli (1508-1572), 1539. CONCORDIA.PARVAE.RES.CRES-CVNT. (= in harmony small things prosper) Christ, on the right, standing slightly to left and blessing, on the left, the kneeling Doge and five senators; in field above, SENATVS / VENETVS; in exergue, .1539. Rev. .ADRIATICI.REGINA..MARIS. (= Queen of the Adriatic Sea) The personification of Venice seated facing, between two lions, and holding scales and cornucopiae; to right, trophy of arms; to left, galley; in exergue, .AND.SPINELLI. / .F. . Attwood 209. Kress 416 = NG 474 . Rare in this condition, an attractive, struck example with a tan patina and unusually nice. Extremely fine.

Pietro Lando, Doge LXXVIII, culminated a distinguished career by presiding over the treaty that delivered all of Venice’s remaining possessions in the Morea (= the Peloponessos) to the Ottomans. Much would be recaptured in the late 17th century but would be lost again early in the 18th.
