Lot 16

CENTRAL EUROPE, Boii. 1st century BC. Obol (Silver, 8mm, 0.56 g). Head of a rooster (?) to right. Rev. Uncertain design reminiscent of coining implements: two anvils with separate dies; to left and right, two hammers; in fields, five coin-like pellets. Dembski -. Flesche -. Göbl OTA -. Lanz -. Extremely rare and possibly unique. An intriguing issue missing from all the references known to us. Extremely fine.

From the collection of a Swiss mathematician, formed in the 1980s.

This is a puzzling coin: both sides show clear designs that seem to be hitherto unknown. It does have a curious resemblance to the deniers with coining implements on the reverse struck in Marseille by the Merovingians and similar issues struck later in the name of Louis the Pious in the early 9th century (Depeyrot 607 and Prou 712-713). In any case, our tentative attribution is far from being certain and makes the coin well worthy of further study!
