From the GH Collection, ex Empire Coins Auction 12, 7 September 1990, 448.

At the age of fourteen, Varius Avitus Bassianus inherited the office of high priest of the sun-god El-Gabal at Emesa in Syria (from which is derived his common name, Elagabalus). The cult image of the sun god was a sacred stone and, in 219, when he moved from Emesa to Rome, he took the stone with him; as is commemorated by this coin type.
