An extremely rare 1/2 Shekel of the Barcids in Spain

Starting Price: 2500 CHF
Hammer Price:  2600 CHF
Lot 43

SPAIN, Carthago Nova. The Barcids in Spain, circa 237-209 BC. 1/2 Shekel (Silver, 16mm, 3.48 g 1). Diademed head of male to left (Hasdrubal?). Rev. Prow to right. Villaronga 6A. Extremely rare. Nicely toned. Very fine.

Ex Künker 216, 8 October 2012, 40 and Hess-Divo 325, 23 October 2013, 150.

The identity of the male head shown in the style of a hellenistic ruler remains unclear, but there is a likely case to be made in favor of one of the Barcid generals, possibly Hasdrubal, the founder of Carthago Nova.
