CRETE, Gortyna. Circa 300-280/70 BC. Hemidrachm (Silver, 17mm, 3.13 g 1H). Head of Europa to left, her hair bound in a bun at the back. Rev. Head of a bull to right. Le Rider -. Cf. Svoronos p. 163, 49 and pl. XIII, 21 (drachm of barbaric style). Apparently a very rare variety, possibly unpublished. With dark deposits and encrustations as found, otherwise, good fine.

From the Brünn Collection, acquired in Italy prior to World War I.

The eighteen lots of Cretan coins that appear in this sale (two being multiple lots, see lots 960 and 961) all come from a collection that was initially formed over 100 years ago. While the full story of this collection will appear with those coins from it that appear in Nomos 12 (22 May 2016), we wish to nothe here that all the coins were given to thank an Austro-Hungarian soldier by an Italian Banker whose life he had saved during the Battle of Caporetto in late 1917! The coins themselves must have come into the Italian’s possession at some time prior to World War I.
