An apparently unpublished and unique Tetartemorion from Skotussa

Starting Price: 225 CHF
Hammer Price:  2200 CHF
Lot 206

THESSALY, Skotussa. Late 5th century BC. Tetartemorion = quarter obol (Silver, 8mm, 0.20 g 1). Head of bridled horse to right. Rev. Σ - Κ - Ο Club; all within a shallow incuse square. BCD -. BCDT -. Of great rarity, apparently unpublished and unique. Rough surfaces as found, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Quarter obols are extremely rare in Thessaly; among those known are pieces from Pherai (BCD 1306), Pharsalos (BCDT 637, the note to this coin and that to BCDT 612 about the denomination in Thessaly is incorrect), Pharkadon (BCDT 612) and Larissa (BCDT 143). The use of Herakles’ club as a type is reminiscent of the rare dichalkon from Skotussa (BCD 1338), which dates to the first quarter of the 4th century.
