THESSALY, Perrhaiboi. First half of the 4th century BC. Tetrachalkon (Bronze, 21mm, 8.54 g 1). Veiled head of Hera facing, turned slightly to the left, wearing necklace. Rev. ΠΕΡΡΑΙΒΩ[Ν] Zeus, nude, standing facing, head turned to left. holding thunderbolt in his right hand and long scepter in his left. Rogers 439 var. Traité IV 582, pl. CCXCIII, 5. Beautifully preserved with a fine dark brown patina. Some traces of corrosion on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

A note from BCD: This is an example of a coin that up to 10 or 15 years ago was considered extremely rare. Not any more, although problem free specimens are still almost impossible to find. I also think that ASW dates it too early, but as I have no proof for the “late 4th century” date that I propose, I’ll let it stand as it is.
