The fortress was built by the architect Donato Bramante on order from Julius II, in order to better protect the port from attacks, which had often occurred in the later 15th century. It is generally known as the Forte Michelangelo after Michelangelo, who designed the upper part of the hexagonal "maschio" tower, completing it in 1535.
