L Ϛ / CHMΑCIA Semasia wearing elephant's skin headdress, a hunting tunic, a long, billowing cloak, holding a palm branch in her upraised right hand, riding a horse galloping to left. Dattari (Savio) 3780. Geissen 2182. K&G 39.163. RPC IV.4 Online temp. 14613.19 (this coin). Rare. With an attractive reddish-brown patina. Good very fine.

Semasia was the personification of a Nile festival - The Festival of the Indication, which began to be celebrated during the 2nd century, and took place in the first part of August at the time of the height of the flood of the Nile. Semasia is shown riding on a galloping horse to announce the coming arrival of a good flood, thus ensuring the land's fertility.
