IONIA. Ephesos. Circa 340-325 BC. Octobol (Silver, 17.5 mm, 5.04 g, 12 h), Rhodian standard, struck under the magistrate Themistagoras. Diademed bust of Artemis to right, her hair tied into an open knot at the back, wearing a pendant earring, traces of drapery, and with her bow and quiver over her left shoulder. Rev. [Θ]ΕΜΙΣΤΑΓΟ[ΡΑΣ] /Ε - Φ Forepart of a stag kneeling to right, his head turned back to left; in the field to left, behind the stag, palm tree; in the field to right, bee flying to right. This magistrate unpublished on octobols save for auction appearances; he was previously known from his appearance on tetradrachms, as SNG Copenhagen 222. With a bust of Artemis of exceptionally fine late Classical style. Beautifully toned and remarkably elegant. Very minor metal faults and some uncleaned deposits as found, otherwise, extremely fine.
