IONIA. Uncertain mint, perhaps Smyrna. Circa 600-550 BC. Hemistater (Electrum, 16 mm, 8.38 g), Phokaic standard. Head of a roaring lion to right, his jaws open wide. Rev. Slightly irregular incuse square. Cf. Cahn, Knidos pl. 20, 1 = Traité I, 1, 177 and pl. V, 5 (stater, but obverse stylistically different and with a completely different reverse). Linzalone 1077 (this coin, attributed to Smyrna). Cf. Rosen 313 = Monnaies et Médailles 72, 1987, 76 (1/6th stater). Cf. Weidauer 183-4 (staters, but of a different style). Unique. Clear, well-struck and well-centered. About extremely fine.

From the Acer Rubrum Collection, ex Triton IX, 10 January 2006, 950.

Related to the very rare staters of Smyrna with a large roaring lion on the obverse, filling the entire field of the coin, but of a more linear and sharper design pattern. The reverse square punch is also similar to the stater issue. The roaring lion on our coin carries power and expression at its fullest.
