ARGOLIS. Epidauros. after c. 68-69 AD. Assarion (Bronze, 26 mm, 7.11 g, 9 h), a Corinthian as, struck under the duovir L Caninius Agrippa, countermarked by Epidauros, c. 75 (?). ROMAE ET IMPERIO Turreted head of Tyche/Roma to right, countermarked twice on the face and neck: 1) a serpent entwined staff within a rectangular indent on the neck and back of the head, and, 2) monogram of ΕΠ in a square indent on the cheek. Rev. L CANI AGRIPPAE IIVIR COR Victory moving left, holding wreath and palm. Amandry XXIV, 45. Dl RIIh corr., and note 273 (this piece). Howgego 648 (for the countermark). RPC 1217. Very rare as a countermark. An unusual and intriguing example of a later 1st century AD countermark. Countermark: very fine; Coin: about very fine.
