Obsidional 50 Sols (Silver, 34x34 mm, 28.81 g, 12 h), struck in commemoration of Groningen's successful resistance against the forces of Bernhard von Galen, Bishop of Münster, who besieged the city from 9 July to 17 August; with a laudatory inscription on the reverse, privately and contemporarily engraved. • IVRE • • ET • TEMPORE • 1672 • Crowned arms of Groningen; to left and right, 50 - ST. Rev. Doen / Bommen Berent / deed, voor Groningen / de mis, men dese penningh / Sloegh tot een gedachtenis, / belegert den 9. For the coin, Delm 736. For a similar example see: MDC Monaco 7 , 2021, 679 (but the inscription begins with Doen rather than Als, and there are other slight variants). While the coin itself is relatively common, examples with privately engraved inscriptions on the reverse are very scarce, if not rare. Toned. About extremely fine.
