Acquired from Classical Numismatic Group in 2013.

The features of King Charles I are most familiar to us today from his wonderful portraits by van Dyck, especially the extraordinary "Charles I in Three Positions", now in the Royal Collection and painted in 1635/6. His moustache and goatee, known as a van Dyck, has been popular ever since: there were many other famous wearers, like Lenin and Colonel Sanders, but one of the very few to have a similar fate was George Armstrong Custer. This medal, however, gives us a portrait of Charles as a young man in all his elegant handsomeness. It would have served as a royalist keepsake over the centuries since it was made.
