ITALY, Tuscany. Florence. Alessandro de¨Medici, Duke of Florence, 1532-1537. Medal (Bronze, 41 mm, 55.16 g, 12 h), an original cast, by Domenico di Polo de’ Vetri (after 1480-circa 1547), Florence, 1534. · ALEX・M・FLO - RENTIAE:DVX・PRIMVS・ Bareheaded and cuirassed bust of Alessandro to right. Rev. FVNDATOR QVIETIS M D XXX IIII Pax seated to left on a cuirass, holding, in her right hand, a lit torch to a pile of arms to the left, and, with her left, a cornucopia; in the exergue, the astrological sign of Mars between two stars. Attwood 771. An impressive, heavy piece with an attractive light brown patina. Some marks in the fields and on the edge, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, ex Rauch, 19 September 2011, 5305 and from the Hall Collection, III, Baldwin's 61, 28 September 2010, 2257 (part, but somewhat misdescribed in both previous sales).
