ITALY. Papal States. Clement VII, 1523-1534. Medal (Bronze, 35 mm, 28.43 g, 12 h), unsigned but by Giovanni Bernardi da Castelbolognese (1496-1553), on the return of the Medici to Florence in 1530, Rome, undated but circa 1530 - apparently an original and not a later restrike. ・CLEM・VII・PONT・MAX・ Bearded bust of Clement VII to right, wearing cope and morse bearing the facing head of Christ; below, leaf. Rev. EGO・SVM・IOSEPH・/ FRATER・VESTER Joseph, seated on a base ornamented with the Medici arms and before a column, revealing himself to his 10 half-brothers and his full brother Benjamin. Bargello 514b. Pollard, National Gallery I, 416. An attractive example, with a fine portrait. Minor marks on the obverse and with a flan fault on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.

From a European collection, ex Künker 297 27 October 2017, 3117 and Künker 281, 27 September 2016, 1690.
