The gold coinage of Tiberius must have been enormous. It was struck in the great branch mint of Lyon and was, as a class, one of the most widely circulated of all Roman gold issues. They are found all over the Empire and beyond - they were very popular in India where they were imported as payment for the spices and luxuries the Romans craved. They were struck throughout Tiberius's reign and were all basically the same type: however, the small differences in the portrait and Livia's throne have enabled scholars to put the coinage as a whole into a convincing chronological framework. This piece was minted quite early in the series. The fact that these coins were so popular meant that they were extensively used: many lasted in circulation until at least the 3rd century, albeit heavily worn. A lovely piece like this, so well-centered and in such fine condition, is, thus, not at all common, and must have been hid for safekeeping within a year of having been issued.
