Lot 159

CYPRUS. Paphos. Athe..., circa 470-450 BC. Stater (Silver, 23.5 mm, 11.20 g, 9 h). Man-headed bull reclining to right on ground line, his bearded head turned back to left; around, 'Wa-the-wo/[ro]-se' in Cypriote syllabic script. Rev. 'pa-si ('King' in Cypriote syllabic script) Astragalos; below, ivy leaf. Cf. BMC 1 and pl. VIII, 1 and XXI, 2 (no ivy leaf). Jameson 2334 (no ivy leaf). Weber 7701 (no ivy leaf). Cf. Leu Winterthur 4, 2019, 369 var (differing legend, but the same reverse die, though the ivy leaf was not noted, thus resulting in a misattribution). A very interesting example of a hitherto unknown (?) Paphian king. Flan faults and an irregular flan, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection formed prior to 2005.
