KINGS OF PERGAMON. Eumenes I, 263-241 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 30 mm, 17.07 g, 1 h), struck in the name and with the portrait of Philetairos, founder of the kingdom, Pergamon, circa 263-255/0. Laureate head of Philetairos to right. Rev. ΦΙΛETAIPOY Athena seated left on backless throne, holding, with her right hand, a shield adorned with a gorgoneion and, with her left, spear downwards over her left shoulder, and resting her left elbow on a sphinx; to left, below her arm, ivy leaf; on the throne, Α; to right, bow. SNG Paris 1604-9. Westermark Group II, obverse die XXVII, reverse die unlisted. A superb, wonderful coin with a magnificent high relief head of Philetairos, providing a portrait of great power. Virtually as struck.
