This coin commemorates the games held in Beroea that honored Alexander and also had Olympic status. The Neokoria was awarded to the cities that possessed a temple honoring the cult of the emperor. Nerva awarded the first Neokoria to Beroea; the second was awarded by Elagabalus. However, the second neocorate was withdrawn by Severus Alexander, possibly because Elagabalus had awarded it; the title was restored during the reign of Gordian III.
