PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy VI Philometor, first reign, 180-164 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 14.22 g, 12 h), Salamis in Cyprus, year Γ (3) = 179/8. Diademed head of Ptolemy I to right, wearing aegis. Rev. BAΣIΛEΩΣ ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟΥ Eagle with closed wings, standing left on thunderbolt flanked by the piloi of the Dioskouroi surmounted by star; in the left field, LΓ (date) above ΣΑ (mint abbreviation); behind eagle, petasos with fillets. Apparently unpublished variety. Svoronos - (cf. 1324-1326 for RY 2&4 of Ptolemy V). SNG Copenhagen - (cf. 565/6 for RY 5&6 of Ptolemy V). Attractively toned. Obverse struck from a worn die and reverse slightly off-centre, otherwise, extremely fine.
