Lot 391

ENGLAND. Circa 17th century. Seal matrix (Copper, 36 mm, 6.63 g). A flat, one-sided circular AE plate with two opposed suspension loops (one bent shut) On the edge, within two incised concentric circles, a double incised pattern; within an inner incised circle, a pair of crossed incised forearms with hands; to left and right, the carefully incised initials T G. Rev. The reverse is flat and shows no signs of it ever having borne any form of decoration. The two loops, on opposite sides of the disc, imply that this piece may have been suspended from a belt or something similar. A quick check through the data base of the Portable Antiquities Scheme has produced some similar items, but nothing quite like the present piece - this search was not extensive, however, and a more exhaustive investigation might prove more informative. Some signs of wear and one loop bent shut, otherwise, good very fine.

From the APCW Collection, USA, acquired from Artemission in London in 1999, and, presumably, originally a metal-detector find.
