Maximianus, first reign, 286-305. Aureus (Gold, 17 mm, 5.35 g, 6 h), Treveri (Trier), 303. MAXIMIA-NVS P F AVG Laureate head of Maximianus to right. Rev. HERCVLI CONSER AVG ET CAESS NN / TR Hercules standing facing, laureate and with his head to left, quiver at his left shoulder with its bandeau across his chest, his lion's skin over his left shoulder and with his bow held in his left hand and resting his right hand on the end of his club. Biaggi 1783. Calicó 4651 (same dies). Depeyrot 108/4. RIC 234. Rare. Lightly toned and clear. About extremely fine.

From a European collection, bought with the stated provenances of the Knobloch Collection II, Stack's 3 May 1980, 1211 and Münzen und Medaillen XIX, 5 June 1959, 260: but both of these provenances are incorrect. While this coin clearly has long been in collections, at present we do not know which.
