M AVR CARINVS NOB CAES Laureate, draped and cuirassed three-quarter length bust of Carinus to right. Rev. M-ONETA A-VGG The three Monetae standing facing, their heads to left, each holding a cornucopia with her left hand and a scale over a pile of coins with her right; the Monetae on the left and right both wreathed, heavily draped and holding balance scales with a short handle (for weighing silver and aes); the central Moneta, diaphonously draped, with her hair in a close-fitting headdress and holding a small balance scale with a very long handle (for weighing gold). Cf. Gnocchi II, 6 and pl. 122, 8 (but of smaller module). Extremely rare. A remarkably impressive piece, with a particularly noble and elegant portrait. Some breaks in the plating showing the inner bronze surface, otherwise, extremely fine.
From a European collection, acquired in Munich in the late 1990s.
