KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Seal (Lead, 33x10 mm, 83.94 g, 11 h), dies engraved by Pyrgoteles (?). Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. Palladion set on a shield. No parallels known. Very rare and unusual! Nearly very fine.

From an American Collection.

This lead bulla is, in most probability, from the later period of Alexander the Great's reign. The imagery is fairly classic and mimics, in some aspects, the famous gold staters of Alexander the Great minted in Pergamon. Pyrgoteles was, by roal degree, the only individual allowed to produce images of Alexander the Great on seals ans gemstones.
