KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Drachm (Silver, 17 mm, 4.33 g, 11 h), struck posthumously under Antigonos I Monopthalmos, Abydos(?), circa 310-301. Head of youthful Herakles to right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on a low backless throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and, in his right, eagle standing right with closed wings; below eagle, monogram; below throne male head to left, wearing Phrygian head-dress. Price 1577. SNG Copenhagen 960. Well centered and with an unusual mintmark. Obverse struck from a slightly worn die, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
