LESBOS. Mytilene. Circa 521-478 BC. Hekte (Electrum, 10 mm, 2.56 g, 6 h), c. 500-490. Forepart of a winged boar flying to right, with one wing above and the other below his body. Rev. Lion’s head with open jaws to left; behind, rectangle; all in incuse. BMFA 1678. Bodenstedt 10. Very rare. Attractively toned. Good very fine.

From the Aletheia Collection and the collection of Dr. R. Maly, LHS 100, 23 April 2007, 297, originally acquired in 1971.

This is one of the rarer of all the early issues of Mytilene – those with the reverse type to right are much more common.
