KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Stater (Gold, 17 mm, 8.51 g, 9 h), Tarsus, circa 332/1-327. Head of Athena to right, wearing a Corinthian helmet adorned with a griffin and a pearl necklace. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Nike standing left with her wings spread, holding laurel wreath in her right hand and stylis in her left; in field to right, kerykeion. Le Rider pp. 134-139 (Tarsus). Price 3458 (Sidon). SNG Berry 176 (Sidon). Very rare. Well-centered and clear. Extremely fine.

Long attributed to Sidon, albeit with a question mark, this issue forms part of a group that has now been convincingly reattributed to Tarsus (see the note to CNG 114, 2020, lot 121, for a full discussion).
