BYZANTINE SEALS. Gregorios Taronites, Late 11th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 27 mm, 17.32 g, 12 h). OA/ΔH/M/H -T/PI/O/C Nimbate St. Demetrios standing facing, wearing military dress and holding spear with his right hand and sets with his left hand his shield on the ground. Rev. +KE BΘ/ ΓΠΗΓΟ/ΡΙΩ ΠΡΟ/ΕΔΡΩ ΤΩ ΤΑΡΩΝ/ΙΤΗ, in six lines within round dotted border. Extremely rare and of historical importance. Very fine.

This seal can very well be from the early carrier of the well known Gregorios Taronites. Gregorios Taronites was the governor of the Chaldia theme of Pontos who revolted against the rule of Alexius I Comnenus in 1103/4. For three years he was the governor of the Trapezond area, until 1106, when he was captured by Alexius. For a coin of Gregorios Taronites see Obolos 20, lot 1424.
