Starting Price: 100 CHF
Hammer Price:  500 CHF
Lot 1009

BYZANTINE SEALS. Alexios Komnenos, proedros, 2nd half of the 11th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 31 mm, 19.21 g, 12 h), shortly before summer 1074. O A/ΔH/MH -T/PI/OS Nimbate St. Demetrios standing facing, wearing military dress and holding spear with his right hand and resting his left hand on shield by his side. Rev. -+-/ KE BOHΘH/ΘEI AΛEΞI/Ω ΠPOEΔPΩ / TΩ KOMNH/-NΩ- in six lines, within plain linear border. BZS.1951.31.5.16 (from the same boulloterion). A historical seal. Clear and with a tan patina. Very fine.

This is almost certainly the seal of the future emperor Alexios I Komnenos, used during his early stages of his carrier. The same depiction of St. Demetrios, possibly created by the same hand that engraved the boulloterion for this seal, is on the boulotterion that struck Zacos 2705, which is also attributed to Alexios Komnenos. Alexios was still a proedros, until summer 1074 when he was promoted to be a protoproedros.
