IONIA. Magnesia ad Maeandrum. Archepolis, circa 459 BC. Tetartemorion (Silver, 6.5 mm, 0.19 g, 5 h). Laureate and bearded head of Zeus to right. Rev. Eagle flying to right within a linear border in a lozenge-shaped incuse square. Cf. Nollé & Wenninger A 2a (trihemiobol). Triton X, 2007, 298. Scarce. Toned. Very fine.

Archepolis was the son of Themistokles, one of the greatest Athenian statesmen and generals of the first half of the 5th century. He was later ostracized and fled to Ionia where, by order of the Persian king, he was made governor of Magnesia. Themistokles struck a small series of silver fractions, and when his son Archepolis succeeded him as governor around 459, he did likewise.
