ROMAN WEIGHTS, Western Mediterranean / North African Area. Circa 4th-6th centuries. Solidus weight (?) or dedicatory placquette (Bronze, inlaid with silver, 15x15x2 mm, 4.06 g), square, with a flat top and bottom, and a plain edge (as MAH B1). +SER / GIVS, inlaid in silver; between lines, horizontal band inlaid in copper. Rev. Christogram between Α and ω; above, incuse band, originally inlaid in another metal. Possibly unpublished. There are 6th century Byzantine seals known bearing the name Sergius in two-line form (as Dumbarton Oaks BZS.1958.106.4707 – a bilingual Greco-Latin example), but they are only peripherally relevant to this piece. Whether this piece can be best described as a plaquette or a weight is unclear. The fact that other similar square pieces are all around the same weight makes it probable that they were, in fact, thought of as solidus weights, albeit light ones. Brown and red patina. About very fine.

From a collection in Holland.
