Lot 398

ROMAN WEIGHTS, Western Mediterranean / North African Area. Circa 4th-6th centuries. Solidus weight (?) or dedicatory placquette (Bronze, inlaid with silver, 14x14x2 mm, 4.11 g), square, with a flat top and bottom, and a plain edge (as MAH B1). SECV / NDI, inlaid in silver. Rev. VL, inlaid in silver. Bendall 170. MAH 413. Simmons & Simmons MB 57, 2011, 505. Very rare. An epigraphic curiosity. Tan patina with some green corrosion, otherwise, good very fine.

From a collection in Holland.

This and the following lot are generally termed solidus weights, even though they are rather light: at 4.11 this seems the heaviest known with others weighing in at 4.10, 4.06, 4.02 and 3.32. As a result they are sometimes described as being dedicatory plaques, but for what and why is not explained.
