Lot 390

Commemorative Series in the name Constantinopolis, 348. Medallion (Bronze, 17 mm, 2.80 g, 5 h), struck under Constantius II, Rome, 348. CONSTAN - TINOPOLIS Pearl-diademed and draped bust of Constantinopolis to right. Rev. P - R Pax standing left, holding branch in her right hand and transverse scepter in her left. Cf. LRBC 612. RIC VIII 106 (R4). Very rare. Sharply struck, clear and with an attractive dark patina. Minor mark on the reverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

This attractive little 'medalet' must have been made for the festivities held in Rome in 348 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Rome's foundation; similar to those struck a century earlier by Philip I. This time, of course, provision was made for Rome's sister-city, Constantinople. Pieces like this would have been tossed to the crowds.
