Crispus, Caesar, 316-326. Light Miliarense (Silver, 24 mm, 4.10 g, 6 h), Siscia, early 326. DN CRISPVS NOB CAESAR Laureate and cuirassed bust of Crispus to right. Rev. CRISPVS CAESAR / SIS Four standards. RIC VIII - (but see p. 449, 198 and 199 for the corresponding issues for Constantine I and Constantius II Caesar). Of great rarity, apparently unique. Toned, sharply struck and very attractive. Some minor deposits on the obverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex Hess Divo 334, 29 May 2018, 136 and Jacquier 40, 16 October 2015, 528.

This coin was very probably struck only a short time before Crispus was executed on his father Constantine's orders, after being accused of assault by Fausta, Constantine's second wife. Very shortly thereafter Constantine discovered that Fausta was lying, apparently to ensure that her sons, Constantine II, Constans and Constantius II, would have no serious rival for the succession. Constantine then had Fausta thrown into a bath of boiling water; she was also subject to a decree of damnatio memoriae, which, oddly enough, was not revoked when her sons became emperors.
