TROAS. Scepsis. Severus Alexander, 222-235. (Bronze, 29.5 mm, 9.29 g, 1 h). ΑΥ Κ Μ ΑΥ CE ΑΛEΞΑΝΔΡΟC Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander to right. Rev. CΚΗΨΙΩΝ ΔΑΡΔΑ Dionysos standing right, head turned to left, holding kantharos in right hand and thyrsos in left; at feet to left, panther standing left with his head turned to look back. RPC VI Online temp. 4107. SNG Leypold 494. Weber 5436. Winterthur 2790. Dark green patina. Porosity, otherwise, very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, acquired from Acropolis-Burbulis on 16 October 1999.

The interesting reverse inscription tells us that Skepsis was founded by the Dardanians, a people closely related to the Trojans (according to the myth). Aeneas, the ur-Roman hero, was of Dardanian origin and it is likely that the inscription on this coin was used to stress the city's connection to Rome.
