KINGS OF PARTHIA. Phraates III, 70/69-58/7 BC. Drachm (Silver, 21 mm, 4.13 g, 12 h), Nisa, 66-62/1. Diademed facing bust of Phraates III, with mustache and short beard, wearing torque with central medallion and elaborate robes. Rev. BAΣIΛE[ΩΣ] / MEΓAΛ•V // APΣAV•V // [Θ]ΕOΠATOP•Σ / [E]VEPΓETOV // [Ε]ΠI+ANOVΣ / [KA]I +IΛEΛΛHNO[Σ] Parthian archer (Arsakes I) seated to right, holding bow; below bow, ΝΙ. Cf. Sellwood 35.8 (Darius). Sunrise 332 (this coin). A scarce issue from a rare mint. Bold and attractive. Some striking flatness on both sides, otherwise, extremely fine.

Ex Triton XXI, 9 January 2018, 559, from the Sunrise Collection, The New York Sale XXXVII, 5 January 2016, 100, and ex Peus 338, 27 April 1994, 137.

One of the amusing things about Parthian coins is the way ever more recent research has a habit of changing their ruler attribution! One hopes that this coin type, one of the most impressive of all Parthian drachm types, remains as Phraates III.
