overview
Estimate: 1500 CHF
Hammer Price:  1600 CHF
Lot 222

IONIA. Teos. Circa 499-493 BC. Hemihekte (Electrum, 8 mm, 1.20 g). Forepart of a griffin to right, his right forepaw raised. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Apparently unpublished and unknown. A strikingly attractive coin, with a powerful griffin. About extremely fine.

No, this is not an unpublished hemihekte from Phokaia, but with a seal off the flan: if it were Phokaian the type would be to left. This is surely from Teos, whose griffins are to the right, and since that city is not otherwise known for having minted coins in electrum, it seems likely that it was a special issue struck during the Ionian Revolt (499-493), during which numerous allied cities produced unexpected coinages.
