Lot 211

IONIA. Ephesos. Mid to later 5th century BC. Drachm (Silver, 14.5 mm, 3.07 g). Ε-Φ Bee with curved wings and straight antennae. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Cf. BMC 17. Cf. SNG Kayhan 2, 244-245. SNG von Aulock -. Attractively toned, with a beautifully struck obverse in high relief, and apparently very rare. Extremely fine.

From the collection of a Swiss collector who bought it in the 1990s from "one of the Turks".

This seems to be quite a special piece; in style it comes between those bees with curved wings, curled antennae with no ethnic, and dumpy flans; and those with straight wings, curled antennae with ethnic, and broader flans.
