Zunfthaus zur Saffran, Zurich

overview
Estimate: 4000 CHF
Hammer Price:  6000 CHF
Lot 205

IONIA. Uncertain. Circa 600-550 BC. Trite (Electrum, 13 mm, 3.05 g), of very light weight, but not plated. Boars' head to right. Rev. Double incuse square. BMFA 1760 = Weidauer 55. Extremely rare and unusual, apparently the second known example of the type. About very fine.

From a Swiss collection, acquired around 2000.

Exactly where this was struck, and what it is, is highly uncertain. The very low weight – the other known example in Boston weighs 4.63 g – raised the suspicion that it could be plated; however, analysis revealed a content of 56.1% silver, 37.7% gold, 5.3% copper, 0.7% tin, 0.1% bismuth and 0.05% lead. So it is not plated. In addition, it certainly circulated over a period of quite some time since it shows considerable circulation wear (as does the Boston piece).
