MYSIA. Kyzikos. 5th-4th century BC. Stater (Electrum, 19 mm, 16.08 g), c. 420s. Youthful female head to left, her hair tied with a thin taenia, and wearing a thick neck-band with a central medallion; all set on a disc background set on a tunny fish swimming to left. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square. Hurter & Liewald I, SNR 81, 2002, 20a (this coin cited) = Jameson 2566 (this coin). SNG Paris -. Von Fritze -. Of great rarity, the first published example of the three pieces now known. With an elegant and delicately made head. Obverse lightly struck and with some die wear, otherwise, good very fine.

From a European collection, ex Vinchon 26 April 1999, 182 and Vinchon 25 May 1988, 52, and from the collections of Robert Jameson and Prince Philip of Sachsen-Coburg-Gotha (1844-1921), Hamburger, 20 February 1928, 173, who received it as a gift from his younger brother, Ferdinand I of Bulgaria.
