Gregorios Taronites, Duke of Trebizond, 1103-1106. Follis (Bronze, 23 mm, 2.07 g, 6 h), . IC XC Draped bust of Christ Pantokrator facing, wearing nimbus and holding Book of Gospels with his left hand and raising his right hand in benediction. Rev. A-Λ/ Β-P Cross potent on base and a single step. Bendall NC 1977, Issue 13A. Rare and historically important. Slightly bent, otherwise, very fine.



Gregorios Taronites was the governor of the Chaldia theme of Pontos who revolted against the rule of Alexius I Comnenus in 1103/4. For three years he was the governor of the Trapezond area, until 1106, when he was captured by Alexius.
