Pescennius Niger, 193-194. Denarius (Silver, 17mm, 3.14 g 12), Antioch. IMP CAES C PESC NIGER IVST AVG Laureate head of Pescennius Niger to right. Rev. BONI EVENTVS Bonus Eventus standing right, holding plate of fruit in her right hand and two grain ears in her left. BMC 299 var. (different obverse legend). Cohen 9. RIC 5b. Rare. An attractive piece with a striking portrait. Struck on the usual short flan and with some minor metal flaws, otherwise, good very fine.

From the GH Collection, ex Roma Numismatics 6, 29 September 2013, 951.

The fact that there are many varieties of the coinage of Pescennius Niger known shows how enormous his minting effort must have been. After his final defeat and execution by the forces of Septimius Severus his coinage must have been vigorously recalled and re-minted: thus its great scarcity today.
