Lepidus and Octavian, Denarius (Silver, 17mm, 3.86 g 6), military mint traveling with Lepidus in Italy, November-December 43 BC. LEPIDVS PONT MAX III V R P C Bare head of Lepidus to right. Rev. C CAESAR IMP III VIR R P C Bare head of Octavian to right. Babelon (Aemilia) 35, (Julia) 71. Cohen 2. Crawford 495/2d. Sear Imperators 140a. Sydenham 1323 var. An attractive piece with old, dark toning. Banker’s mark on the obverse and some light scratches, otherwise, good very fine.


From the GH Collection, acquired from Dr. A. Saslow on 27 January 1990.

This issue was struck by Lepidus to commemorate the foundation of the Second Triumvirate, and was probably struck from the proceeds of the proscriptions in preparation for the campaign against Brutus and Cassius in 42 BC.
