Lot 708

T. Didius, 113-112 BC. Denarius (Silver, 19 mm, 3.68 g, 4 h), Rome. Helmeted head of Roma to right; monogram of ROMA behind, denomination mark below. Rev. T · DEIDI Battle between gladiator armed with a whip and a shield, on the left, and one with a sword and shield on the right. Babelon (Didia) 2. Crawford 294/1. Sydenham 550. Excellent head of Roma. Some deposits and cleaning marks on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.

From the W. F. Stoecklin Collection, Amriswil, Switzerland, acquired from Münzen & Medaillen, Basel, prior to 1975.

Babelon suggested that the reverse portrayed an episode in the Servile Wars, but this seems, as Crawford so acidly puts it, unlikely. It undoubtedly shows the kind of action the contemporary viewer would see at the games T. Didius intended to put on as Curule Aedile.
