JUDAEA. Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). Antoninus Pius, 138-161. (Bronze, 26.5 mm, 11.13 g, 6 h). IMP ANTONINVS AVG P P P Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. CO AE CA Turreted and draped bust of the Tyche of Jerusalem to right. BMC 6-10. Kadman 16. Meshorer, Aelia Capitolina 21. Rosenberger 11. RPC Online 6396. SNG ANS 598-600. A lovely coin, sharply struck in high relief, with an excellent portrait of Tyche, and with a beautiful black patina. Usual flan cracks, otherwise, good very fine.

This coin depicts the goddess Tyche wearing a mural crown. Her crown constitutes the famed walls of Jerusalem. These walls were once rebuilt by Nehemiah who was permitted by Artaxerxes to rebuild them after they were previously destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC (Neh. 1-6). These walls were later expanded by the Hasmoneans, Herod the Great, and Herod Agrippa I.
