PISIDIA. Termessus Major. Pseudo-autonomous issue, 3rd century. (Bronze, 30 mm, 14.41 g, 12 h). TEPMHCCEΩN Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. AYTONOMΩN Solymos seated to left, helmeted and holding a short sword with his left hand and raising his right in salute; in exergue, wreath (?). SNG Paris 2205 (same types, but same obverse die as 2206). SNG von Aulock -. Nicely centered and with an attractive green patina. Very fine.



There are two varieties of this type: one with the legend AYTONOMΩN on the reverse, as this, and another with the legend COΛYMOC (as SNG Paris 2166) . Since the figures are the same, this proves the identity of the figure here as the local hero Solymos, who is variously identified as the son of Ares and Caldene, the daughter of Pisidus, or as the son of Zeus and the nymph Chaldene.
