Nikolaos Metropolitan of Pessinus in Galatia, 11th century, c. 1054. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 29 mm, 19.45 g, 12 h). O/ N/I-K/OΛ/A' Nimbate facing bust of Saint Nicholas, raising hand in benediction and holding the book of the Gospels. Rev. +ΚЄ RΘ/ NIKOΛAΩ/ MPOΠOΛ,T,/ ΠICNOYN/T in five lines within dotted border. DOC -. Zacos -. Very rare. Good very fine.

Apparently only the names of ten bishops of Pessinus are known from the Late Roman/Byzantine period: from the 4th through the 11th century. Very interestingly, the last one known was a certain Nikolaos who attended the Council of Constantinople of 1054, when Michael Caerularius proclaimed the Schism with Rome. Since this seal is clearly datable to the first half of the 11th century, the issuer of this seal could well be the Bishop Nikolaos who participated at the Council. Thus, this seal serves as a memento of one of the most momentous events in the history of Christianity.
