Lot 422
Estimate: 750 CHF
Time of Leontius, 695-698. Georgios, General Commerciarios of the Apotheke of Isauria, 695-697. Seal (Lead, 32 mm, 30.59 g, 12 h), Indictions 9 and 10 of Leontius, 696/7. ΓΕΩPΓ[IOC A]ΠO YΠATΩN / ł-I/Θ Leontius, crowned, standing facing, wearing chlamys and holding globus cruciger. Rev. [S] ΓE/NIKOY KO/MMEPKIA/PIOY AΠOΘI/KHC EΠAPX/IAC ICAYP/[IAC] in seven lines. Cf. Zacos I, 191-192 for similar seals from Armenia and Caria; for a seal, which might possibly be of the same commerciarios, see Zacos I 177. A strongly impressed and clear example with a tan patina. Some minor defects and marks, otherwise, about extremely fine.
The commerciarii were charged with the duty of collecting the "κομμέρκιον", a 10% tax applied, as is the VAT of today, on all commercial activities. The use of a double indiction date means that the seal's issuer had been in office for two years, in this case 695/6 and 696/7, and that the seal was made during his second year in office.

Rev. VICTORIA AVSЧ I / CONOB Cross potent on base and three steps. Cf. DOC 1j, MIB 1 and SB 1447, but this legend apparently unpublished. From the Trausnitz Collection, ex G. Hirsch 135, 19 January 1983, 803.
The legend on the obverse of this coin is quite extraordinary! All the other examples of this type known have the correct Latin spelling of the emperor's name, Filepicus, but this one, with the double P, shows clearly that the engraver was thinking of how the name was spelled in Greek! In some ways this is actually a wonderful die engraver's mistake. Interestingly enough, there are other examples from the same obverse die, but which seem to have been either unnoticed or noticed, but not recognized! CNG has had at least three: CNG 109, 2018, 768, CNG 105, 2017, 1046 and Triton VI, 2003, 1203 in all three the second P was unnoticed, including the tremendously legible Triton piece; another appeared as Heritage 3067, 2018, 30397 (the second P was recorded, but they did not realize what it was, it cannot be seen in the illustration because the coin is in a slab...
