Lot 334

Aurelian, 270-275. Aureus (Gold, 22 mm, 4.12 g, 7 h), Mediolanum, 1st officina, end of 270. MP C D AVRELIANVS AVG Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Aurelian to right. Rev. CONCORDIA MILI / P Concordia seated to left, holding a standard in each hand. Calicó 3988 (same dies). RIC 87. RIC online 1355. Well-struck on a broad flan, toned and attractive. Traces of restriking on the obverse, giving Aurelian two faces (!), test cut at the middle of the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, Nomos 19, 17 November 2019 334, originally acquired from Münzhandlung Athena on 27 April 1988.

The minting error on the obverse of this coin, showing a second face of Aurelian in place of the emperor's ear on the main bust, is absolutely extraordinary. I am quite unsure how this was done!
